The Texas Declaration of Independence

"The Unanimous
Declaration of Independence
made by the
Delegates of the People of Texas
in General Convention
at the town of Washington
on the 2nd day of March 1836."

In 1836, Texas declared its independence from Mexico and became the Republic of Texas. Fifty-four delegates of the Convention of 1836 began meeting on March 1 at the village of Washington-on-the-Brazos, between Houston and Austin. All the settlements of Texas were represented by delegates elected one month earlier.

The delegates had very little time. They wrote the Texas Declaration of Independence overnight! It was adopted by the delegates the following day, March 2. Afterwards they prepared a Constitution for the newly formed republic. They did all this amid daily reports of the invasion of Texas by Mexico, the collapse of the Alamo and the destruction of its defenders.
